Te Deum (Op. 22 / H.118)

Te Deum (Op. 22 / H.118)

The Te Deum (Op. 22 / H.118) by Hector Berlioz was completed in 1849. It derives its text from the traditional Latin Te Deum, although Berlioz made some changes to word order for dramatic purposes. It was conceived as the climax of a grand symphony celebrating Napoleon Bonaparte. The finished work was dedicated to Albert, Prince Consort, husband of Queen Victoria. Some of the material used by Berlioz was originally written for his Messe Solennelle of 1824. The first performance of the work was on 30 April 1855, at the Church of Saint-Eustache, Paris; Berlioz conducted an ensemble of 900 or 950 performers

The work is written for two soprano tenor and bass choirs and one treble (children's) choir. Altos are often allocated the soprano part of the second choir. There is one section that has a short section optionally allocated to SS(A)TB soloists, and another that includes tenor soloist throughout

Note Perfect provides training aids for choir and soloists for any permutation the choir director/conductor chooses to perform the work. In selecting our work, Alto's should choose the Soprano package as Choir 2 Soprano is most suited to the Alto range.

Ordering Information
  • N.B. When the composer wrote this work he included two instrumental movements (without choir) that are rarely performed or recorded. They are:
Prelude, which if used is after the 2nd Section. The instruction for including Prelude is "If the Te Deum be performed neither for a Thanksgiving after a victory, nor for for any Service of a military character, this Prelude must be omitted."
  • March for the presentation of the Colours. (Another military context).

Note Perfect does not provide these two purely orchestral sections, but it does provides everything for Choirs and Soloists and for the purpose of Choir and Soloists deems this to be the "Complete Work."

For the choir :

  • a single voice part highlighted on piano over the orchestral accompaniment for each voice separately. (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass).
  • all four parts played together on piano, with the orchestral accompaniment *
  • orchestral accompaniment with assistance played on the organ *
  • orchestral accompaniment with no assistance for voice*

* This is included when you purchase any choir voice part, as the Bonus Download.

For the soloists :

  • All soloist parts played on a wind instrument, with the orchestra
  • The accompaniment without assistance
  • Soloist parts played together without the orchestra (for the quartet section)
  • One voice removed. EG an alto soloist can rehearse and hear the other parts that she doesn't sing.
Accompaniment
