The Missa solemnis in D major was composed between 1819 to 1823, and was first performed on 7 April 1824 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The Mass is set for SATB Choir and SATB Soloists.

For the choir :

  • with the chosen voice (i.e. Soprano 1; Alto1; Tenor 1; Bass 1 for Choir 1. The remaining parts and Choir 2 are played on wind instruments and orchestral accompaniment
  • with the chosen voice (i.e. Soprano 2; Alto2; Tenor 2; Bass 2 for Choir 2. The remaining parts and Choir 1 are played on wind instruments and orchestral accompaniment
  • orchestral accompaniment and the choir vocal parts played together on piano*
  • orchestral accompaniment with instrumental assistance for voices*
  • orchestral accompaniment with no assistance for choir. (as the orchestra plays)*

For the soloist :

  • Orchestral accompaniment with the soloists parts played on wind instruments with orchestral accompaniment
  • Orchestral accompaniment only with no help for the soloist. Wind instruments however play the choral parts
  • all the soloist sections played together without the orchestra.

Complete Accompaniment :

  • the orchestral accompaniment with assistance for choir and soloists on wind instruments
  • accompaniment with no assistance for the choir or soloist, just as the orchestra plays.

    It should be noted that the score clearly shows SOLI for the entire Sanctus and has chorus entry at Benedictus (bar 114 for basses and later for all four parts.) However some conductors choose that the choir enters at bar 34 (Pleni sunt coeli) or bar 53 (Osana). Our choir recording anticipates this and has provided them and marked them as "optional."
